Scoliosis Screening

Many people with scoliosis go through life without being diagnosed, as mild scoliosis is not always apparent. Whether it's mild or severe scoliosis, it is essential to work towards correcting this spinal condition as it may worsen if left untreated.

When undergoing a scoliosis screening, several tests and assessments are performed to fully understand the type of scoliosis one has, the structural changes it has produced, and what the best course of action will be to correct the curvature. Below is a detailed overview of our scoliosis screening process:

Medical History

Our provider will begin by taking a detailed medical history, including any family history of scoliosis or other spinal conditions, previous injuries, or relevant health concerns. During this time, we will also discuss symptoms you have been experiencing and to what degree they have impacted your quality of life. It is pertinent we get the full scope of your condition and limitations.

Physical Examination

Next, a thorough physical examination will be conducted to assess posture, spinal alignment, and overall musculoskeletal health. Specific aspects of the physical examination may include:

Adam's Forward Bend Test for Scoliosis at Waterfront Chiropractic in New York

Adam's Forward Bend Test: The patient will be asked to bend forward with arms extended and knees straight, allowing our provider to assess the spine visually for any asymmetry or rotational deformity.

Pelvic and Leg Length Assessment: An assessment of pelvic alignment and leg length will be performed on the patient, as discrepancies can be associated with certain types of scoliosis.

Trunk Rotation Assessment for Scoliosis at Waterfront Chiropractic in New York

Assessment of Trunk Rotation: The patient will be asked to stand upright. At the same time, our provider places the scoliometer on specific landmarks of the back, such as the spinous processes of the vertebrae or the rib cage. The provider then takes readings at multiple spine levels to determine the degree of rotational asymmetry.

Neurological Assessment: An assessment of neurological function, including reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation, will be performed to detect any signs of nerve compression or related concerns.

Radiographic Evaluation

If scoliosis is suspected based on the history and physical examination, radiographic imaging, such as X-rays, may be ordered to assess the degree and pattern of spinal curvature, as well as to evaluate the alignment and integrity of the vertebral column. The X-rays will provide detailed images of the spine in different views (e.g., frontal, lateral) to measure the curvature and rotational deformity accurately.

If you or a loved one potentially has scoliosis, we invite you to come into our office for a comprehensive screening and evaluation. Get started on the path to true relief from scoliosis, and schedule your appointment.
